Madeira Friends visit Funchal Fire Brigade
Exploring the work of Madeira’s firefighters through the eyes of our international community — October 2025

What happens behind the doors of a fire station? Most of us pass by the big red trucks and sirens without thinking twice about the people inside, the ones who put their lives on the line when disaster strikes. This week, our community at Madeira Friends had the chance to find out.
We were welcomed into the Funchal Fire Brigade, where firefighters, the ambulance team, and support staff generously opened their doors to us. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this wasn’t just a tour, it was a rare opportunity to step into the world of Madeira’s first responders.

The visit started with demonstrations of fire safety. We learned the basics of using a fire extinguisher, and got to put out a fire ourselves. The firefighters also walked us through the specialized vehicles and machinery they use, from house fires to fighting the massive forest fires that Madeira knows all too well. It was fascinating to see how much preparation and coordination is required for every operation.

Jean even tried on a firefighter’s full uniform. What looked like “just gear” with the weight of the uniform, combined with the oxygen tank and other equipment, is no small thing. It’s a physical reminder of the strength and endurance required in this profession.
For many in our international community, the visit carried a deeper meaning. As Rikka from Finland shared: “It was a great experience. I will soon be giving a lecture to firefighters in my hometown, and now I have a real story to share. The Portuguese firefighters have been in the news in Finland many times, and they are regarded as heroes.”

That sense of admiration was shared by all of us. Beyond the equipment and procedures, what stood out most was the dedication and pride the firefighters have in their work. They reminded us that public safety is not just about responding to emergencies, it’s about community, responsibility, and courage.
At Madeira Friends, we believe that building these kinds of connections is important. Our mission has always been to bring people together, locals, expats, remote workers, and newcomers, in ways that create real bridges between communities. Visits like this help us understand each other better, strengthen mutual respect, and remind us that we all share a common home here in Madeira.

We are deeply grateful to the Funchal Municipal Firefighters, the ambulance team, and all the staff who welcomed us so openly and a little more aware of what it truly takes to keep Madeira safe.
