When internationals and locals meet local science — October 2025

What happens when a group of curious internationals and locals get the chance to step inside one of Madeira’s most fascinating research hubs? A lot of questions, a lot of smiles and perhaps some surprises.
The Oceanic Observatory of Madeira** (OOM)** welcomed us behind the scenes this week, opening their labs, research vessel, and control room. We got a peek at how their team studies marine life, tracks the health of the Atlantic, and uses technology to unlock the ocean’s secrets.
The group didn’t hold back, they had some great questions and asked if volunteers could get involved.

And then came the big surprise: **exclusive underwater footage of the ****Boeing 727 that crashed near Madeira in 1977**. Still resting on the seabed, the plane’s TAP Portugal colours remain clearly visible, a haunting and yet captivating reminder of the island’s history.

Everyone were not only impressed but also thankful for such a rare experience. Visits like this show just how powerful it is to connect internationals with local initiatives: it sparks curiosity, builds bridges, and makes Madeira feel even more like home.
